Valentine’s Day

I like every single holiday in a year, and of course Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite. I can use its name and indulge in a festival mood. However, I never had a Valentine’s Day in its proper fashion. I once received a bunch of orchids, but didn’t understand what they mean. Also only once in my life I received a rose, which was given by another couple because I don’t have one. I dream a romantic dinner with candles and a present with a big surprise.
This year, I was going to have a drink with friends, but I slept through the whole night. I certainly missed the drink and miserably had another Valentine’s Day alone, in such a unconscious status.

The Professor

I was reading a small poem today, and was fascinated by it’s skillful and subtle wording. I dream becoming a freelance writer, but would never have made an effort to sit down and concentrate on writing. I am so interrupted by ought-to-do work everyday and suffer unaccomplished work in the long run. I still hope that one day I could write, one day my words will shine.

With envious eyes, I watch him go
In his lively, not-old walk each day
Between the library and his office,
His strapped-up briefcase holding books
and his yellow, tattered scraps of notes.

Tousled in permanent disarray,
His shock of white hair sets him apart
From less spectacular confreres
and with his small, white mustache, pip-stained,
Makes him well-known to all on campus

His vested suit is always rumpled,
Flecked with ashes and tobacco grains
From the blackened pipe that seems to send
Upward to higher realms of learning
Wisdom in the blue and drifting smoke

On campus, he’s a special person,
Not necessarily understood.

But respected, held in high regard,
And, by some like me, deeply envied
For his unhurried, kindly living.

His word is apart from what we know
As real and present and demanding.
We’ve no time for the impractical.
His kind eyes look upon our doing
With gentle interest and amusement.

When he gives up his cluttered office
In surrender to advancing age,
Practicality will take over
And no one will ask us: What is Man?
Nor remind us Man’s end is Being.

Time Management

When I was a Master of research student at UCL, I need to take a research module every Friday. It is a course including a four-day residential training designed for Master of research students and doctorate students. One day, a tutor asked us to identify our strength and weakness, such as creativity, teamwork, time management, etc. I was a little bit surprised that a doctorate student shared with me that time management is the most difficult skill to learn. She was very concerned about her time management. I was so naïve and thought how comes time management was difficult. I had never had problems with it. I always finished work earlier than teachers expect. NOW, I think I start to suffer my bad time management. I didn’t envision the third year while I was the first year. I did have a goal but unfortunately I didn’t divide it into small objectives for different stages in my study, or I should say I indulged myself in the flexibility of small deadlines along this DPhil march. Only when a task or project is big or long enough, new problems emerge. Then I feel it is worth walking up here, because it presents me new problems I have never encountered in my life. This educational experience has finally been unique and enhances my critical thinking, etc.
