Make audio books

I finally owed an iPod. I started to organise my music files and audio books in iTune. Most of audio books I have were mp3 files. It clustered all over the place in the iPod, difficult to navigate. Also iPod doesn’t support the bookmark for music files, but m4b audio files. My job is to put all these chapter mp3 files into one single audio file m4b then.

Usually we buy audio books in local bookstore, iTunes Music Store or Audibel.com. I try to keep one book for one file, but for better results, it’s better to keep one file not larger than 320MB or 5 hours.

I tried two ways to combine and convert. One is to use MP3 Merger to combine mp3 files and use iTune to convert it to m4a. Then change m4a to m4b. The sound quality was not that good and it took quite a long time for the process. The other one is to use the MP3 to iPod Audio Book Converter. It worked pretty well, but no chapter indication. This is so far what I found for Windows. So far I am pleased.

A Hybrid Online Research Instrument

Given the current proliferation of web surveys, more creative views about potential future forms of survey research merit serious attention. Challenges facing today are no longer how to accommodate new technology within a traditional research strategy, but how to foster the development of new effective research methods. This talk will describe one practical approach to redesigning web-based survey research. In this talk, the framework and implementation of a new interactive web survey-like instrument will be discussed, as a means of maximising the convenience of data collection and the flexibility of data analysis. More importantly, given the variations in the way technology is currently utilised in survey research, this talk attempts to attract researchers’ attention to more creative views about potential future forms of survey research.

For this, I went to Boston. It is a city that I always want to visit. When I walked out of the airport, the city was in snow. It reminded me Beijing. For one moment, I thought I went back to Beijing. It was the same feeling I walked out of the Beijing Capital Airport. I called SJ. Because of her, I felt home when I went to the US last time. I called J as well. He was really kind and helped me a lot last time. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go and visit them this time.

After settled down, I had a task for the day that I need to buy either an ipod or a voice recorder for my research. I went to a shopping center and found the Apple shop. Originally I was planning to buy 160G ipod classic, but it looked clumsy among all other products. I got hesitated and ended up nothing back to the hotel.

Next morning, I went to the conference venue exactly on time. I was running. It was being useful; especially I was thinking that CG might possibly be one of my cases. I got familiar with a lady from Scotland and felt quite close. Later today, I got to know a lot of people. For the following three days, we talked together a lot and went to a pub as well. They were being very kind and friendly to me. We will catch up with by email later on and hopefully we can came up with some joint project. They all came to my session and I was quite embarrassed that I should prepare my presentation better. I definitely should spend more time in preparing this. I was working on a social event through out the whole night until 6am in the morning before I ran to the airport. I almost missed my flight. I was a bit regret that I didn’t manage my time well.

There was one presentation I was especially interested in. I have never thought that I could use my Master’s research at UCL for my current study. What she did linked exactly those two subjects together. It left me more to think and plan.

Accumulation for leaping

I didn’t celebrate New Year as well as my birthday this year. I think I was staring at the screen and tried to find something for theoretical implications for that survey research tool. I got quite annoyed by my low productivity. The term started. I went to talk to my two supervisors. It was really encouraging. I had a very efficient day. I never wrote papers at night and I thought my brain usually switched off at that time. I was awake and finished the paper quite happy. I shouldn’t work alone and struggled for so long. Or maybe I actually benefited from all the dull reading I did for the last two weeks. At least, I could cross one on my to-do list.
