The authors of the Unicef paper, Report Card 7: an Overview of Child Wellbeing in Rich Countries, measured more than 40 indicators of children’s health and happiness and described Britain as a “picture of neglect”. The UK finished in the bottom third of 21 industrialised countries in five out of six categories — material well-being; health and safety; educational well-being; relationships; behaviour and risks; and subjective well-being — ending up overall last, after the United States. The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Finland topped the standings. [1]
The original reason for me doing research into education is to find out to what extent different education systems can change the perception of culture across countries. It seemed that I didn’t follow it. Until this news came out, I think I was dragged back again.
Before the new year, I finished my report and the IT work. I was there waiting for an amazing new year. On New Year Eve, I did my laundry, reinstalled Windows, and decorated my kitchen. In the evening, several friends came and had hot-pot at my place. We had a lot of fun together. Festival for me is only an excuse for getting together with family and friends. I don’t think I am a good hostess. One of my friends came but couldn’t find where I was living. So sorry. I was so surprised to get the flower! The next day, G and I went to China Town in London. There were so many people on the street. It seemed to be impossible for us to get into it. We were so hungry and tried to find a place to feed ourselves. Surprisingly, lion dance followed us and danced right in front of that restaurant. We felt so lucky to always have those lion dances following us in China Town. This is going to be a great year! I think we spoiled ourselves – with a lot of snacks and Cherry Valley Duck. Also it’s a reunion day for me as well. I met my university classmate M. We are from the same place, went to the same department in a same university, and came to the UK after graduation. We didn’t meet with each other within these two years. Why? I don’t know – maybe it’s because we are so busy these days. Always good. He is so generous and brought us to a fancy Sichuan restaurant – I love the food. I missed home~.

New year, my year, my way~

I had a presentation on Generalizability this afternoon. I talked about the deficiencies of it. Here are some quotes from the Case Study Methods book. You can tell how it went on. I am still thinking.
“Dependence on the assumption of determinism”
“Dependence on inductive logic”
“Dependence on the assumption of freedom from time and context”
“Entrapment in the nomothetic-idiographic dilemma”
“Entrapment in a reductionist fallacy”
Refer to the classic concept of generalizability defined by Kaplan
I had an interview exercise recently. After the interview, I think my qualities might affect the course of the interview a lot. I found this personal quality check list in a book and tried to give myself an evaluation. Given the fact of knowing how to conduct an interview, this might help me to make a basic change from another angle in the next interview.
“To interview effectively is not just a gift but a skill that needs to be developed.”
Right before I was leaving, I realised that my work had not finished yet. I had to bring my laptop, in case anything happened during I was away. I was planned a run-away break from work this weekend, but it seemed that I could never say I was ready. However, I pretty like this kind of work style, which makes me hungry all the time. At last minute, I decided that I should call it a day, and ran to the train station. I had a wonderful time staying with the B family this weekend. They were so nice to me! And I got to know I was going to marry a sailor (^ – ^ I liked that kind of game).
During my stay,I appreciated those snowdrops spreaded around; I enjoyed watching red kites flying over; I was so happy with tasty food; mostly I enjoyed talking with them. They shared a lot with me. I am going to practise how to make an angry and authority face when a student is naughty. I am going to be a very strict teacher then…lol
Back to normal again, tons of words are just stuffed in my head. I hope this thinkmap could help me a bit.
