Ramble on the Internet

Fifteen years of the web

The web took off fifteen years ago. From that time, things happened on the web changed dramastically. Something, hard to be described, is gradually becoming indispensable part of everyday life.Ā My research is looking into acedemic dialogue based on the Interent. And of course, theĀ web isĀ anĀ important part,Ā that cannot be neglected. I hope everything will be going on well, when this new term starts.

What type are you?

When I was little, people told me that my handwriting can show what kind of person I was going to be. I didnot know anything about drawing. I liked drawing, but I never got chance to work on it. After I went to Beijing, things changed – it’s a city full of chances. I was lucky, because I happened to know what I had never ever dreamed of before. There are some pictures to show What type you are by choosing your favourite one. This maybe work hopefully. And I was just wondering whether drawing can also show personality as handwriting did. Isa gave me lots of her drawings, mainly about flowers. I hanged all of them on my noticeboard. They had rich colours with casual sketchs. I like them. I hope she will take care of my drawings as well. I said I was going to be a very strict teacher, but I cannot refuse her ask. I have to gave her more next time, as I promised to her. Did I indulge her?

Repeated mistakes

I started to program again. Two months ago, I finished an innovated online survey system for my project. I thought that I could reuse it in a future study, but I haven’t done any documentation for it. I have to hurry up to comment on those codes, otherwise, I might forget what I have done. I am programming another survey system, which is different from the one I have done. I found that not so many people could change their mind to use my new survey method. I have to go back to the traditional way to program a regular system. However, I am a big fan of AJAX, so I might adopt some techniques when I am implimenting this system. Besides, I will not give up persuading people to use new survey method, but I have to improve the system I have done to make it shining.

Back to the topic. I always find small mistakes during coding. These mistakes seem to appear again and again. I never learn to avoid them. I was just debuging one block of code, which seemed never have gone through the process. The logic underneath seemed to be all right. I was just stucked there, and could not go further. After the lunch, my thinking changed, I tried to bebug it in another way. Everything is clear now – just a small typing mistake.

It seems that some mistakes will never avoid. It just pops up anytime in the coding. It is ironic to realise that I have experienced this mistake before; but it is also encouraging to know that I have to be more careful next time.

Run, when facing questions

It is not easy to become a good teacher here. People usually take the PGCE course before they start their teaching careers. I was thinking whether teaching can be taught. What would the students get out of the PGCE course during one year? I haven’t taken this course yet, and clearly cannot make any reasonable judgement. However, I went to the introduction of PGCE course today as an affiliated staff. I did have a quick glance of the start of the course. I was not there for the whole time. When I was there, I was inspired by the course director. I think she can be a vivid figure for those intern teachers to learn. What students learn is not what teachers impart; by contrast, what students learn is what teachers do. She had a good control of the whole session and kept asking questions to our researchers from the student aspects. Those questions waked me up better than a black coffee early in the morning. The brain has to run when facing questions, while a number of people sitting there and looking at you.
